High-precision Flagship Model

The UT58D Multimeter DM3-Class plays a professional role in the UT58 series for "inductance measurement + high current measurement":

  • Key difference from UT58A/B/C: The UT58D uniquely features inductance measurement (up to 20H) and supports 20A high current measurement (A/B/C only 10A), while also adding an automatic shutdown function.

  • Difference from UT58E: The UT58E is a 4.5-bit high-precision version (20,000 counts, 0.05% accuracy), but it lacks inductance measurement functionality; the UT58D Multimeter DM3-Class trades 3.5-bit accuracy for inductance measurement capability.

  • Target users: Electronic engineers, repair technicians, and electronics enthusiasts who need to measure inductors, transformers, chokes, and other inductive components; industrial electricians requiring 20A high current measurement.

Application

  • Industrial Manufacturing: Maintenance of electrical equipment in industries such as metallurgy, communications, petroleum, power, and chemicals.

  • Electronic Repair: Troubleshooting and maintenance of circuit boards/power equipment.

  • Inductor Testing: Inductance measurement and quality screening of inductors, transformers, and chokes.

  • Power Systems: AC/DC voltage/current testing of power distribution equipment and switchgear.

  • Education and Training: Basic measuring tools used in electronic technology teaching experiments.

Key Usage Tips

The UNI-T UT58D Multimeter DM3-Class is a manual-range handheld digital multimeter with no data communication interface (no RS232/USB/Bluetooth), therefore no PC software or drivers are provided.

This instrument is a stand-alone unit; all measurement functions are performed via the control panel, and measurement results are displayed directly on the LCD screen. Users must manually record the data.

Data Recording Recommendations

Since the UT58D does not support PC communication, for data recording or analysis, the following methods are recommended:

  • Manual recording: Manually record data using paper or spreadsheets.

  • Photo archiving: Utilize the clear display of the large LCD screen to photograph and save measurement data.

  • Upgrade option: If PC data acquisition functionality is required, consider models from the same brand such as the UT61E/UT71 series with RS232/USB interfaces.

FAQs:

What are the core features of the UT58D? What advantages does it have compared to a regular multimeter?

Its core advantage lies in its integrated inductance (L) measurement function.

Most ordinary multimeters on the market can only measure resistance and capacitance (C), lacking an inductance range. The UT58D Multimeter DM3-Class specifically provides four inductance ranges: 2mH, 20mH, 200mH, and 20H. This makes it not only a multimeter but also a basic LC tester (inductance-capacitance meter), making it ideal for testing transformer windings, filter inductors, and coils.

Why is the screen response time slow when measuring capacitance or inductance with the UT58D?

This is normal.

When measuring capacitance or inductance, a manual-range multimeter requires an internal charging and discharging process or the establishment of a fixed AC excitation signal for impedance calculation. The larger the capacitance or inductance value, the longer it takes to establish balance internally. When measuring large capacitors (e.g., from microfarads to 100μF), a wait of 2-5 seconds is a normal hardware characteristic.

It is a manual range. What special precautions should be taken when using it?

Blind testing is strictly prohibited; the range must be adjusted from largest to smallest.

When the magnitude of the voltage or current being measured cannot be estimated, the rotary dial must first be selected to the maximum range for that function (e.g., to measure an unknown DC voltage, start with the 1000V range). If the value is found to be very small, then gradually switch to lower ranges to improve resolution. Using a small range to measure a high voltage from the outset can easily burn out the fuse or the instrument.

Why can't my UT58D measure current, but voltage and resistance measurements are normal?

99% of the time, the cause is a blown current range fuse inside the multimeter.

Troubleshooting and Solution: This usually happens when the multimeter probes are accidentally connected in parallel to the power supply (misusing it as a voltmeter) while measuring current, causing a sudden surge of current that blows the fuse.

Replacement Method: Unscrew the back cover of the multimeter. The UT58D typically contains two fuses. One protects the microamp/milliamp range (usually F200mA/250V), and the other protects the 20A high current range (usually an F20A/250V ceramic fuse). Replace it with a fuse of the same specification and size; do not use copper wire instead.

Why does the number on the screen remain unchanged after the probes are removed from the circuit when the Hold button is pressed?

This is because the data hold function has been triggered.

The UT58D Multimeter DM3-Class panel has a HOLD button. Pressing it locks the currently displayed value on the screen, making it easy to retrieve the reading after measurement in a narrow, dark place. Pressing the button again removes the "H" mark in the upper left corner of the screen, and the multimeter returns to normal real-time measurement mode.
