The PIL 40-161 series is a PXI/PXIe 16A high-power electromagnetic relay switch module designed for switching heavy-duty AC or DC loads.
Product Description

The PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A can also be used for driven switching of large external relays, contactors, and solenoids. This series offers both SPST and SPDT contact configurations, with five standard configurations available: 16/12/10 x SPST or 12/6 x SPDT. It has a maximum single-channel switching current of 16A, can switch 250 VAC or 300 VDC voltages, has a maximum power of 448 W / 4000 VA, and a maximum standoff voltage of 400 VDC.

As a core member of Pickering's high-power general-purpose relay product line, the core value of the PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A lies in "high density + high current": integrating up to 16 16A power relays in a single 3U PXI/PXIe slot, while ensuring reliable high-current switching capability through silver alloy (AgNi) contacts, and building-in backup relays to achieve field maintenance with minimal downtime.

This series has evolved from the initial 40-161 (PXI-only) to the upgraded 40/42-161A, adding PXIe platform support and optional hardware interlock functionality, while maintaining identical electrical performance between the two generations. Typical applications include automotive, aerospace, industrial control, and power supply testing, where high-power signal switching is required.

The core upgrade of the 40/42-161A lies in its support for PXIe platform and hardware interlocking functionality. For power switching applications requiring modern PXIe system integration or hardware-level safety protection, the 40/42-161A should be the preferred choice; while the older version 40-161 is marked "Alternative product available, please refer to the 40-161A range", and it is recommended that new designs adopt version A.

The PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A is one of the representative products in the high-power PXI relay module product line. The initial 40-161 model only supported the PXI platform (40-161-001/002/003 were SPST configurations, and 40-161-101/102 were SPDT configurations), and featured a 32-bit P1/J1 backplane interface, specifically designed for 16A high-current switching.

The 40-161 series has a clear family relationship within Pickering's high-power general-purpose relay product portfolio. Pickering officially classifies it as a member of the PXI/PXIe high-power general-purpose relay module family, which includes modules with switching currents exceeding 10A:

Key Function of The PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A

The core function of the 40-161 series is to provide a high-density, high-power switch array. Each relay within the module is an independent power switch:

  • SPST models (40/42-161A-001/002/003): Provide 16/12/10 independent single-pole single-throw (normally open) power relays. In the default (discharged) state, all signal paths are disconnected; when energized, the A and C terminals of the corresponding relays are connected, establishing a signal path.

  • SPDT models (40/42-161A-101/102): Provide 12/6 independent single-pole double-throw power relays, supporting signal switching between normally open and normally closed paths (ManualsLib). In the default state (relays not energized), the signal path is either open or normally closed; energizing a specific relay switches the signal path. This design allows the 40-161 series to flexibly construct high-power multiplexing, channel switching, and load distribution switching networks.

Maintenance function

  • Silver alloy contact power relay: The module uses an electromagnetic power relay with silver alloy (AgNi) as the contact material.

  • Spare Relay: A spare relay is pre-installed on the board, allowing for replacement within minimal downtime in case of failure, simplifying on-site maintenance.

  • eBIRST test support (some models): The PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A supports Pickering's eBIRST switch system test tool, simplifying troubleshooting.

Platform and chassis compatibility

  • 40-161A (PXI version): Compliant with PXI Specification 2.2, using a 33MHz 32-bit backplane interface; Local Bus, Trigger Bus, and Star Trigger are not implemented. Compatible with all 3U PXI/cPCI compliant chassis, PXIe chassis Legacy and Hybrid slots, and Pickering LXI/LXI-USB modular chassis.

  • 42-161A (PXIe version): Compliant with PXIe Specification 1.0, compatible with PXIe hybrid slots; Local Bus, Trigger Bus, and Star Trigger are not implemented.

Safety and CE Compliance

All modules in the PIL 40-161 Series PXI Power EMR Module 16A fully comply with CE standards and meet applicable EU directives:

Note: The 40-161 series electromagnetic power relays utilize silver alloy (AgNi) contacts, providing high-power switching capabilities of 400VDC/250VAC for cold switching and 300VDC/250VAC for hot switching, with a maximum power of 448W/4000VA, while maintaining an initial on-resistance of <20mΩ (typically 12mΩ), reducing power loss in high-current paths. Its typical 10ms operating time, >20MHz bandwidth, and 400VDC withstand voltage make it a reliable signal switching core in high-power testing systems.

FAQs:

Q: How does this module perform differently when switching between DC and high-power AC?

A:

When switching AC loads, the arc is easily extinguished due to the zero-crossing point of AC power, allowing the module to easily reach its 4000 VA high power capacity. However, during high-voltage DC switching, the absence of a zero-crossing point means that once an arc occurs, it will be very persistent, thus limiting its maximum DC power to around 448 W. When designing high-current DC tests, the "DC switching power curve" in the datasheet must be strictly followed to prevent exceeding the limits.

Q: What interface does the 16A high-current module use on the front panel? What wiring precautions should be taken?

A:

The 40-161A does not use the common D-Sub interface, but instead employs a high-density GMCT series 20-pin high-current connector. Because it must carry currents up to 16 A, ordinary thin cables will experience significant voltage drops due to heat. Therefore, when customizing the harness, users must select the appropriate AWG wire gauge based on the actual current being carried and ensure a secure crimp or solder joint.

Q: I've heard that some versions allow you to use SPDT (single-blade double-throw) as DPDT (double-blade double-throw) through software?

A:

Yes. For example, the specific sub-model 40-161A-903 physically contains 12 SPDT relays, but they are paired at the underlying drive and software logic level, allowing users to directly control them as a 6xDPDT in a unified manner.

Q: If you suspect that the contact resistance of a 16A contact has increased after high-intensity operation, how do you troubleshoot and repair it?

A:

This module can also be quickly and automatically tested using Pickering's eBIRST diagnostic tool. Furthermore, for ease of maintenance, Pickering typically includes a spare relay in the board packaging. If a relay in a particular channel is confirmed to have burned out due to prolonged thermal switching, an engineer with soldering experience can directly replace it at the board level using the spare, without having to return the entire board to the factory.
